Compounded Semaglutide

A non-FDA-approved version of semaglutide prepared by a state-licensed compounding pharmacy.

Fact-checked 12 May 2026Plain-English Reference

Compounded semaglutide is a customized formulation made by a compounding pharmacy (503A or 503B) and is not reviewed by the FDA for safety, efficacy, or quality. Its availability has historically depended on FDA shortage status — when Wegovy and Ozempic exited shortage, the legal pathway for compounded semaglutide narrowed considerably. Compounded does not mean illegal, but it is materially different from FDA-approved Wegovy.
