Off-Label Prescribing

Prescribing an FDA-approved drug for a condition or population not on its approved label.

Off-label prescribing is legal and common — examples include using metformin for PCOS or low-dose naltrexone for chronic pain. It is distinct from compounding: an off-label prescription uses the FDA-approved drug, just for a different indication.
